6/2/2008: THE BALTORO GLACIER
THE BALTORO GLACIER
A United States based ski mountaineering team has been gathered to focus their skills and passion on the Gasherbum Mountains of the Karakorum range on the Baltoro Glacier in Pakistan. This summer the group will attempt to climb and ski/snowboard Gasherbrum II, one of the few 8,000meter peaks with an incredible and very aesthetic ski descent. Given the right conditions and timing, the group will attempt to link GII with its neighbor GI. For many on the team, it will be their first time in Pakistan, and first time setting foot on the Baltoro Glacier, a place that many mountaineers revere as one of the most powerful places on earth.
The Team: C.A.M.P. Athlete Kim Havell, Kristoffer Erickson, John Griber, Kip Garre, Ingrid Backstrom, Hilaree O’Neill
Dates: June 4th to July 23rd

SPEAKING OF THE BALTORO GLACIER
C.A.M.P. Athlete Simone Moro, widely recognized as one of the world’s leading high altitude climbers, came within 247 meters from summiting 8,000m Broad Peak (located on the Baltoro Glacier) in winter conditions. He was forced to turn back on March 8 and he is thankful that his judgment overcame his desire. He was still two hours away from the summit at 2:00 pm. He felt fine physically and the conditions were fine, but to continue in winter conditions and face a night time descent could have been suicide. Read his trip reports sponsored by ExtremeHD HERE.
